Online degree programs have now lost the nerdy type correspondence school image thay once had. Many universities offer online learning and web based courses. These online degree programs offer convenience and flexibility to working adults who want to obtain or finish a degree. Class schedules and attendance can be worked into the student's schedule. This is contrary to the brick and mortar university with its rigid class schedules.

While traditional universities are referred to as "state" or "non-profit" entities, companies offering online degree programs are usually provided by "for-profit" programs.

Others may require that a testing software application be downloaded and run. Still other test formats for online degree programs might include tests in PDF format that the student prints and completes.

Online degree programs are becoming increasingly popular due to the added convenience for students to study at times that suit their schedules. Most online courses require the students to be online simultaneously with the professor for collaborative sessions at regularly scheduled times. In most cases the student can view lectures at any time of the day. Students living near real world universities can sometimes interact with classmates there.

The flexibility offered by online degree programs is also more suitable for working adults who wish to gain further educational qualifications. Traditional universities cater to students 18 to 22 years old. Adults often feel out of place in this environment. Those with jobs often turn to online degree programs because of their rigid work schedules. This flexibility does not equate to laziness, however. The working student is still responsible for all classwork and tests.

Online education has increased exponentially due the continuing advances in Internet and broadband technology and communications. The development of the internet has driven the development of online learning. Online degree programs offer freedom and flexibility not available to most traditional schools.
